Day 2: Another Beautiful Day in D.C.

We began our day bright and early with a hearty breakfast to get us through a busy day. We headed out about 7:30 to fight morning rush hour traffic on the beltway to get to Arlington Cemetery where we got to witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown. We also got to visit President Kennedy's grave site. The grounds were stunning this morning. The colors of the trees were gorgeous and the sky was blue. It has truly been a gorgeous fall day at a sunny 72 degrees! Thank you Jesus.

Standing in line for breakfast. The waffle maker was a huge hit.

Our kids have such good manners. We receive compliments on them many times a day.

It was a beautiful day to see the cemetery and learn a bit of its history. Whit is a happy morning fellow! :)

Our group picture at the amphitheater at the Tomb of the Unknown.

Again, our students were the epitome of respect. So proud of them!

The eternal flame of John F. Kennedy's grave site.

Abby, Anna Claire & Emmy with the Arlington House in the background. This cemetery is on the former plantation of General Robert E. Lee.

Henry and an interesting sculpture outside the visitor's center. It represents all the armed forces.

From the Cemetery we moved on to the Smithsonian's: American History and Natural History. I love both of these museums. We had lunch in the Smithsonian Cafes. I think we all suffered sticker shock. The food was good but boy was it pricey! It was my pleasure to have a group of boys that I supervised while we visited the Smithsonian's. So my pictures generally include them.
My sweet group of guys.

Yep...we actually did visit the First Ladies dress collection. Michael liked Mrs. Obama's dress the best. :)

Who doesn't love Bert and Ernie.

The chairs from the old sit-com All in the Family.

In the rotunda of the Natural History Museum with Henry, Michael, Joshua & Kaleb.

This megalodon could have eaten my entire group. YIKES!

Afterward, we headed to the National Zoo. We got to see the Pandas enjoying a snack of bamboo. I think many stuffed animals were purchased. Ms. Cutshaw even purchased a class pet while we were at the zoo.

Cade found a really cool hat.

After a very quick dinner at the Reagan Federal Building food court we fought afternoon rush hour traffic out to Maryland to see Mary Poppins at the Olney Theatre. It was a really great production. These pictures do not do it justice.
Stage set at Mary Poppins.

She actually flew from the stage at the end. So cool!
We really had a great day. The Cubs just won the World Series and I know we are all ready for bed. We are letting the kids sleep in a bit since we got home so late. Tomorrow we leave out at 9:30 for our White House tour. Then it's off to the Air and Space Museum and the Holocaust Museum. We will have an Even Song service at the National Cathedral at 5:30 before we have dinner at Union Station again. To wrap up tomorrow evening we will visit the Martin Luther King Memorial, FDR Memorial and lastly the Jefferson Memorial.

Thank you again for praying over our trip. The rain forecasted for tomorrow has been removed. It's supposed to be 82 degrees here tomorrow and cloudy. Is this really November?

  1. Bravo to EVERYONE involved in planning and executing this trip! What a privilege for these students to be able to see and do SOOOOOO much in Washington, DC in so little time. I knew all of those late nights spent in trip planning would pay off with a fabulous experience.

I'm exceptionally proud of the students for their behavior during this trip. I've been fortunate enough to hear many positive comments of CAK students during our trips to Europe - people really notice school groups' behavior, and I've only ever heard positive things.

Thank you 7th grade teachers: Angie, Jaime, Lee Ann, Kaylah, Sharon for all of your incredible preparation efforts. Thank you bus driver, Robert. And many thanks to the parent chaperones.

    Sincerely,
    Tim Mynatt

  2. And I almost forgot...Thanks to our new Middle School Principal, Mr. Fulford, for his support, guidance and leadership! It's great to have him at CAK.
